Acotango
THE MOST ACCESSIBLE 6000 OF BOLIVIA
A VOLCANO BETWEEN CHILE AND BOLIVIA
A VOLCANO BETWEEN CHILE AND BOLIVIA
Sitting within both Sajama and Lauca National Parks Acotango is one of the Quimsa Chatas (Three Brothers). It offers a non-technical ascent and is therefore a great introduction to high-altitude mountaineering for a well-acclimatised group.
Acotango is the least challenging 6000m summit in Bolivia - and possibly in the world.
We drive from La Paz across the flat desert-like Altiplano, stopping en route to explore ruins and tombs from the Chipayas culture. We leave our luggage in Sajama town and go for a short acclimatisation walk before dinner and bed.
We start early, and take a 4WD to an amazing 5,500m! From here, the summit (6052m) is 3 to 4 hours on foot. Depending on snow conditions, we might need to use crampons, but never snow axes. Walking sticks are recommended. Having summited we return to the car and to our hostel. We then head to the nearby hot springs for a well-deserved rest and soak!
After breakfast we head to the nearby geysers for short walk and then drive back to La Paz.
