Acotango
THE MOST ACCESSIBLE 6,000-METER PEAK IN BOLIVIA
A majestic volcano spanning the border of Chile and Bolivia
A majestic volcano spanning the border of Chile and Bolivia

Situated within both Sajama (Bolivia) and Lauca (Chile) National Parks, Acotango is one of the spectacular volcanoes that form the Quimsa Chatas (Three Brothers) group. It features a non-technical ascent, making it the perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering for any well-acclimatized group.
Acotango is widely considered the least technically challenging 6,000-meter (19,685 ft) summit in Bolivia—and potentially in the entire world.
We will drive from La Paz across the vast, desert-like Altiplano, stopping along the way to explore the fascinating ancient ruins and tombs of the Chipaya culture. After dropping off our luggage at our lodging in the town of Sajama, we will head out for a short acclimatization hike before enjoying dinner and a good night's rest.
Following an early morning start, a 4WD vehicle will drive us up to an incredible 5,500 meters (18,044 ft)! From there, the hike to the summit (6,052m / 19,855 ft) takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Depending on snow conditions, we may need to use crampons, but ice axes are never required. Trekking poles are highly recommended.
Once we reach the summit and take in the views, we will head back down to the vehicle and return to our hostel. We will wrap up the day at the nearby natural hot springs for a well-deserved soak and some relaxation!
After breakfast, we will take a short walk to visit the nearby geysers before driving back to La Paz.
