Tour Summary

Located in the northern section of the Cordillera Real, Ancohuma is part of the Illampu massif. Despite being much less technical than its neighbor Illampu, its altitude and long approach nonetheless make it a strenuous physical challenge. It should only be attempted by fit and  well acclimatized mountaineers.

DID YOU KNOW?

It is possible to combine Ancohuma with Illampu into a single, challenging, 8-9 day itinerary.

Ancohuma (or Janc´o uma) translates as “white water” In the local Aymara language.

Day 1

We leave La Paz and drive to Sorata (2700m) where we spend the night. We’ll spend the afternoon visiting the San Pedro caves and making the most of the town’s sub-tropical climate.

Day 2

After breakfast we load our gear onto donkeys and hike to Laguna Chijllata (4800m) where we set up our first camp.

Day 3

Today’s hike takes us over large granite slabs to our base camp, Laguna Glacier (5040m), which offers expansive views of the nearby peaks.

Day 4

Today we cross a steep moraine and skirt around a small lagoon at the base of Ancohuma’s glacier. This is where we set up our second, and final, camp (5600m).

Day 5

We leave at 1AM, immediately joining the glacier and navigating across crevasses and slopes of up to 50°. We should reach the summit (6427m) in 4-5 hours, at which point we return to laguna glaciar (5038m) by the same route.

Day 6

We have a long descent today, from laguna glaciar all the way to Sorata where a car is waiting to take us back to La Paz.
